Flood Risk Assessment and Mathematical Modelling

Kaya Consulting undertake 50-60 flood risk assessments every year. Most of these require estimation of design flood flows, mathematical modelling, flood mapping and identification of flood management measures.

We undertake work throughout the UK and understand the different regulatory requirements across the country (Environment Agency, SEPA and NI Rivers Agency). We have also undertaken flood risk assessments overseas (Serbia, Turkey, Finland, Canada) and can develop methods of flood frequency analysis in regions with sparse data.

Kaya Consulting are experienced in the application of 1-D, 2-D and 3-D mathematical models. We have experience in the use of all major commercial packages (e.g., Flood Modeller, DHI, HEC-RAS, Delft) and in the development of numerical codes.

Example Project

Tipner Regeneration Study; Integrated Flood Risk Assessment

Tipner lies within Portsmouth Harbour embayment in southern England. A major re-development project is proposed to transform a large industrial area into a housing and retail development. Kaya Consulting Limited undertook an integrated modelling study for the site.

The assessment considered flood risk from high tides, storm surges, waves, extreme rainfall (pluvial) and flooding from the proposed site drainage system.

In detail the work included, 2-D modelling of the Portsmouth Harbour embayment (DIVAST2D), wave analysis (including overtopping of existing defences based on Eurotop Manual), joint probability analysis and integrated modelling of pluvial flooding and the site drainage system.
