Dalwhinnie Flood Study

Kaya Consulting Limited was commissioned by Dalwhinnie Flood Resilience Group to undertake an assessment of the flood risk to the village of Dalwhinnie from the River Truim. The aim of the assessment was to identify the current flood risk and to consider flood mitigation options to Dalwhinnie

Dalwhinnie has been subjected to flooding historically from the River Truim. Informal flood defences are present along the River Truim to provide some protection to the settlement. Historically these were maintained by The Highlands Council (THC) and were thought to provide some protection to the settlement. THC have indicated that they no longer have the budget to maintain these defences. The Dalwhinnie Flood Resilience Group decided to commission a FRA to better understand the flood risk to the settlement and undertake a high-level review of potential mitigation measures.

Kaya Consulting undertook a site walkover, commissioned a topographical survey and developed a detailed 2D model of the relevant river reach. A detailed hydrological assessment was undertaken including a review of previous flood events supported by a rain gauge that is located in Dalwhinnie. A model calibration was undertaken using available photos from a flood event (See Model Results Figure). A review of potential flood mitigation measures was provided. The results of the study were subsequently taken forward by Fairhurst to further evaluate options for flood mitigation.
