Coastal Processes and Geomorphology

Kaya Consulting are experts in the modelling of coastal processes, including hydraulics, waves, sediment transport and water quality modelling. We can also undertake coastal geomorphological assessments and shoreline management plans

East Lothian Shoreline Management Plan
The East Lothian coastline forms the southern shore of the Firth of Forth and extends over 70 kilometres. The coastline contains features such as raised beaches, salt-marshes, beaches and dune systems and rock outcrops. Most of the East Lothian coast has SSSI, SPA and Ramsar status.

The principal aim of the SMP was to provide a strategic framework for coastal defence in East Lothian.  The project involved the development of a GIS data set comprising a diverse body of data describing the East Lothian shoreline. Based on these data the coastline has been split into management units and appropriate management options have been identified and assessed for each unit.

Yusuf Kaya was the project manager and Sally Stewart was the lead author of the plan.

Gourock Pierhead Development
Kaya Consulting Limited undertook an assessment of the impact of a pier development on coastal processes and sediment transport in a prominent location in the inner Firth of Clyde. The work included site visits, review of literature and review of available site investigation reports.

Following initial studies by Babtie Group, Kaya Consulting was commissioned to assess the potential impact of the proposed changes to the bridge structure and temporary construction works on the water environment in Forth Estuary and particularly on the environmentally sensitive Skinflats and Kinneil Kerse areas located to the south and east of the proposed bridge location.
The study included;

Upper Forth Crossing at Kincardine

  • 2D and 3D hydrodynamic models
  • sediment transport and erosion modelling
  • scour modelling for bridge piers
