Flood Warning Systems Development

Kaya Consulting Limited staff have been involved in the development of flood warning systems in the UK and India. We have also contributed to national scale strategic reviews of flood warning systems requirements.

Andhra Pradesh Flood Warning System

A flood warning system was developed for the Andhra Pradesh coastline as part of the World Bank funded Andhra Pradesh Hazard Mitigation and Cyclone Recovery Project. Flooding of the coastal area of the state occ urs due to high river flows, high sea levels resulting from cyclones and the combination of the two. While working for Babtie Group, Yusuf Kaya and Michael Stewart were lead developers of the integrated (river and coastal) flood warning system.

The river modelling component of the system was set-up within the Danish Hydraulics Institute MIKE suite of programs and included;

Firth of Clyde Flood Warning System

A flood forecasting and warning system was developed for the Firth of Clyde and Clyde Estuary for SEPA. The project was managed by Yusuf Kaya.

The scheme was successfully operated by SEPA for a number of years before it has been updated as part of the national flood forecasting and warning system in 2010.  The scheme was based on a linked 1D and 2D hydrodynamic model which operated automatically twice a day upon receipt of predicted surge data from the Met Office.

The model checked predicted water levels against threshold overtopping levels at 42 critical locations within the Firth of Clyde and Clyde Estuary and prepared the appropriate level of warning for each critical location.
