Swift Water Training, Glenmore Lodge, October 2025
💧 One minute. Ten minutes. One hour:
1️⃣ One minute to control your breathing
🔟 Ten minutes of meaningful movement
🕐 One hour before hypothermia sets in
That’s what cold water gives you, and what our team learned first-hand during a river safety course on the River Feshie last week. A powerful reminder of how critical preparation and calm thinking are when working around water.
Eight of us spent two days at Glenmore Lodge, tackling swift water, cold temperatures, and rescue techniques (in full wetsuits!).
The river safety course covered
- River features: waves, eddies, holes;
- Rescue principles: Shout / reach / throw;
- Rescue principles: Self / team / casualty /kit;
- Swimming: defensive, aggressive and fending off;
- Throwlines: throwing, receiving and recoils;
- Awareness of strainers and foot entrapment;
- Awareness of chest harness/ waders.
Many thanks to all the staff at the Glenmore lodge and course director, George Fell.
